College Basketball Coach to Financial Coach

"Why did you leave your position as an assistant basketball coach at the University of Tennessee?" "Why did you begin working as financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual?" These were questions I heard on a daily basis. I left the college coaching world that I loved to reengage my finance background because my family is the most important thing in this world to me. The time and experiences that I was missing out on with my wife (Brooke) and my only daughter at the time, Charli, wasn't something that any championship, big recruit or healthy salary could get back. Most people come to understand and appreciate that decision but it still leaves them wondering "Why go into the financial planning industry?"

Honestly, because I love it! Becoming a financial advisor has enabled me to merge my love for helping and coaching others with my finance background. Prior to joining Bruce Pearl and later Cuonzo Martin's staff at UT, I had started the internship process with Northwestern Mutual. Although I put the dream of having my own financial planning practice on a hold for a few years, I have absolutely loved reengaging that dream of helping people achieve their financial goals. As a matter of fact, I often tell people that I am now a financial coach.

As any coach would tell you, the relationship and trust you develop with your players/clients is the most important thing that determines their success. After that, you must continue to evaluate the player’s strengths and weaknesses to help motivate them to continually improve and achieve their goals. As a financial coach those important steps do not change. Trust is the life blood our partnership. Hearing their story and understanding the current financial position my clients are in while encouraging them to think about what they want to achieve are vital. Once my team and I understand where our clients are at today and what they want to achieve in the future, we develop a financial game plan that addresses these needs and gets them started on the path to financial security.
